Shopping for riding equipment

Are you a beginner equestrian rider who’s struggling to choose the right riding equipment? From saddles and boots to stirrups and helmets, there are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to selecting the right gear for your needs. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make an informed decision.

Saddles: Choosing the right saddle is essential to ensure your comfort and safety while riding. When selecting a saddle, consider your riding style, the type of riding you plan to do, and the horse you’ll be riding. English saddles are typically used for jumping, dressage, and eventing, while western saddles are better suited for trail riding and western riding styles, shows and gaming. Make sure your saddle fits both you and your horse, you both want to be comfortable to have your best ride. We can help you find a saddle that fits you.  Many English saddles have adjustable gullets to help get the right fit for your horse, or the adjustment can be useful as your horse ages or his muscles change. A good saddle fitter or your trainer can judge the fit of the saddle on your horse.

Boots: Investing in a good pair of riding boots is important to keep your feet and ankles safe while riding. Look for boots with a sturdy sole, ankle support, and a comfortable fit. When choosing boots, ensure that they fit snugly around your foot with enough room for socks. Additionally, make sure the boots have enough of a heel to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup.  English riders typically wear paddock boots (with our without half chaps) or tall dress or field boots.  Western riders typically wear cowboy boots.

Half chaps: They are usually suede or leather but can be made out of Vegan material.  They work with paddock boots to give you the look, feel and security of a tall boot and help prevent rubs.

Stirrups: Stirrups are a crucial component of your riding equipment, as they provide support and stability while riding. When selecting stirrups, consider the type of riding you’ll be doing and your riding style.  There are many different types of stirrups; some are safety stirrups, which allow your foot to come out of the stirrup easily in case of a fall.  Other styles include wider composite stirrups and hinged stirrups for English saddles. Western stirrups are usually a bit wider and make of wood or metal and can have a leather covering.

Helmets: Protecting your head is paramount while riding, which is why a good helmet is essential, and why helmets are non-negotiable when it comes to horseback riding. They provide protection against head injuries in case of falls or accidents while on horseback. When selecting a helmet, look for one that fits comfortably, meets safety standards, and provides adequate ventilation. Look for the ASTM and SEI certification on your helmet. Many of the new helmets have MIPS technology in them to protect against concussion.

Other equipment: Other essential riding equipment includes a riding crop, gloves, and protective vests. Consider your riding style and preferences when selecting these items.

In conclusion, choosing the right riding equipment is crucial for beginner equestrian riders. By considering your riding style, preferences, and safety needs, you can select the gear that will help you ride confidently and comfortably.
